AN ANGEL RIDES IN THE WHIRLWIND

"An angel rides in the whirlwind and directs this storm" was a quote first attributed to John Page in a letter hewrote to Thomas Jefferson. President George W. Bush quoted it in his Inaugural Address on January 20, 2001

As storm clouds gathered at Concord and spread across the land

Farmers, merchants, schoolboys stood with muskets in their hand

The most gifted men assembled in Independence Hall

They forged the noble document and pledged to give their all

God guided them to freedom as he looked down on this earth

And an angel rode in the whirlwind as this country was given birth

On foreign soil or homeland the when winds of war assailed

America withstood each battle and freedom has prevailed

From Valley Forge to Vietnam and those between and since

Our country has been guided by Divine Providence

When terror attacked our country, America stood tall

And an angel rode in the whirlwind with those who gave their all

When each tempest gathered and America faced the test

God sent us noble leaders who stood out among the rest

From Washington to Lincoln, from Roosevelt to now

Men stepped forth with firm resolve as each made a solemn vow

To preserve and protect our liberty so freedom would abide

And an angel rode in the whirlwind and God was by their side

Through the years God smiled down and guided us along

Freedom to worship and faith in Him had made this country strong

In hard times, wars and struggles, He was always there

When our nation faced adversity the people knelt in prayer

The liberty we enjoy did not come without a price

And an angel rides in the whirlwind with those who sacrificed

We cannot become complacent, we must stay true and strong

‘Til swords become plowshares we will persist to right the wrong

One day a child will lead us, the lion will lie down beside the lamb

But for now we must be vigilant and guard the freedom of our land

We ask God to Bless our country as we watch our flag unfurl

An angel rides in the whirlwind and directs the storm in our world

We look toward the future and pray for God to bless

This nation that He’s given us with peace and happiness

May every child remember the brave history of this land

And those who died for freedom, each woman and each man

With courage and commitment to keep America secure

An angel rides in the whirlwind and America endures
